Girls' Education Advocacy

Under our EDUCATION thematic area of work Center for Gender Economics Initiative (CGEIN) received The British Council’s inclusive education project grant known as Girls’ Education Advocacy (GEA) project grant. We signed the contract for the grant in December 2015. Our research location is Kano and our topic is ‘A Study of Science and Mathematics Achievement by Gender in Kano State Science and Technical School Board (STSB) Schools.’


Research Summary

The study will compare male and female senior secondary school students’ achievement in science in 6 STSB schools in Kano State, Nigeria. The sample consists of 240 students randomly selected from the six schools within the three senatorial zones of the state. Five instruments will be used viz:

  1. Attitude towards Science Questionnaire (ASQ)
  2. Science Achievement Document Analysis (SADA)
  3. Stakeholders Focus Group Discussions (FGDs)
  4. Key Informant Interviews (KIIs)
  5. School Environment Observation Checklist.

GEA Grant: Selection of Kano Based Research Associates

We engaged two experienced research assistants after a rigorous selection process. The researchers’ lives and works in Kano to facilitate GEA research work. Both of them and CGEIN’s director attended British Council’s grantees training in January 2015.

Fatima Ibrahim Profile 

Fatima, a girl child education development expert, holds Graduate certificates in International Child and Youth Care for Development and Development studies. She has over 12 years working experience in Kano state education sector especially in the State Primary Education Board and SUBEB. She has led and been part of research committees on early childhood care education, girl child education, inclusive education and school improvement among others in Kano state.

Rabiatu Balarabe Umar Profile

Rabiatu lectures integrated sciences in the faculty of Science education at the Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education Kano. She has sound teaching and research skills. She has a Master's of Science degree in zoology. She has assisted in complex research projects from the process of gathering information to the presentation of findings. As an assistant lecturer, she has been part of designing all course syllabuses, selecting textbooks and writing lectures and tests.
